Week 22 of 24: Training for the Run Amok 50 miler

3 weeks till race day!  Time to wrap myself in bubble wrap and take all of the immunity boosting stuff I can find.

Monday:  Normally rest day, but since the girls wanted to run outside, I decided to get what I could with them and then run post GOTR. We ran a little shorter so my group didn't quite get the 3 miles we have been getting, but we were quite close at 2.90.  Afterwards Coach Butler and I headed out to finish so I could get my 6 in that I needed.  Stella was feeling quite good, so good in fact that she was jumping up and trying to bite my face and even bit my arm once so hard I got a nice bruise.  She was feeling her oats for sure!

Tuesday:  Rest day.  I decided to take one based on how tired my legs were the entire run with the girls and robin.  I feel like I am on the edge of injury so I am listening to my body.  We did Lego club later and one of Andrew's friends was sick.  I was trying not to breath and I am praying Andrew doesn't get it and give it to me or if he does, we get it done quickly so I can get over it and it not affect my race!

Wednesday:  I could do a 10 or an 8.  Both long and both honestly more than my body wanted to do.  I was up at 3:45 am, go figure, so got out of bed at 4 am to fuel and get ready.  Met Robin and Ebby and we got 5 miles in before I dropped off Stella and got Boom and headed out again for another 5.  Boom was feeling good because he was at least a quarter of a mile ahead of me when off leash and then he would either run back to me or stop and wait for me to catch up.  Other than getting his head covered by some sort of sticky seed, he did amazingly well, as he has been.

Thursday:  Girls on the run laps + whatever to equal 8.  I had left my book at the school, and I couldn't remember how long we were running, so decided again to just see what we got with the girls and then add on post getting them gone and on the road.  Stella had an appointment with the chiro, so we could figure out her weird hoppy skippy thing she had been doing.  Good news, she couldn't find any real issues, bad news, there were no glaring issues to fix.  She got a good adjustment and get this, her pelvis was tilted and her SI joint was locked up along with some vertebrae (sound familiar runners?), so our hope is that post the adjustment and some rest, she will be as good as new.  If the hoppy skippy thing continues we will follow up with rads and make decisions.

Friday:  REST DAY!
stretching in the middle of the night
Saturday:  Pace Jackie at the Fall Extravaganza 100 miler.  This is the same race I did my 2nd 50 K at so it holds a special place in my heart. If you have been with me for a while, you would know that I did a 50K on some very tough technical trail that had a super late start and all of these things combined with a very hot late fall day contributed to me getting my first DNF.  When I found this race back in 2017? I immediately signed up so I would avenge my DNF and use my fitness, and happy to say, avenge I did.  Anyway, Jackie had asked me to pace two segments, a 10 mile and an 8ish mile segment and low and behold, I needed an 18 miler for my long run.  Andrew unfortunately had has fun pumpkin race rescheduled to Saturday as well, so very quickly watched one of his races and then headed down to Colony KS to meet up with Jackie and start my duties.  The course was beautiful, the temps were perfect, and we quickly banged out her first 10 with me pacing.  Jackie and I go way back, way back to dog agility times.  We hadn't really been around each other in years, so we had fun catching up with each other on our lives.  I dropped her off in time to eat a half of a grilled cheese sandwich and down some caffeine before picking her up again at the Colony trail head for another 8 miles. I should say that Jackie was an amazing runner to pace.  Even when she didn't want to move, she moved.  She never complained and even when we were hiking she was able to keep about a 16:30-17 minute pace.  I would crew her again in an heartbeat.

our amazing crew
Sunday:  That was suppose to be the end of my pacing duties but one of her pacers had a bum knee that was killing him.  After trying to take a 2 hour nap and maybe getting 30 minutes if an hour of broken bad sleep, I got out of the Tahoe and prepared to pace again.  We had 6.5 miles to go before her last aid station where her crew chief would pick her up to take her to the end.  We were pretty much power hiking at that point, as running was really killing her stomach.  Power hiking is something I hadn't really practiced for my ultra, so it was super good for me to try and keep a 16 minute per mile hiking pace to keep her going at a good clip.  We had to stop a few times for bathroom breaks and stretching, and we were running out of foods she could stomach, but we made it in to her final pacer and crew chief.  Headed to the finish to sit with everyone else and see her come in to get that buckle.  Y'all, this weekend was SO inspirational, but I still don't really want to do a 100 just yet.  I don't think I could handle the running constantly on no sleep as well as the forcing yourself to eat no matter what.  Never say never right?  Headed home after lots of hugs and high fives loaded up on caffeine and talking to my mom.  Had to take a 2 hour nap later to get back to some sort of normalcy. Just 30 minutes of sleep was not enough but that is ultra running for you!

headed home with a tired and smily girl
What a great week!  Glad to be in the taper and glad to be on the downhill slide.  Terrified of something happening so wishing we could fast forward because I am SO ready!  Have a great week!

October Runfessional

Okay here goes.  Short and sweet.  Welcome to the RUNfessional.
Courtesy of RelentlessFowardCommotion

Almost to the finish line!  Week 22 of 24 and feeling great, although I runfess I may start walking around with a can of Lysol.  If I am forced to be around one more sick kiddo/adult in a close confined space, I will SCREAM!  With my propensity to get chest colds, I can not afford to get sick now.

I miss lifting. I love reading about others lift and I can't wait to get back to it, but I runfess that I am probably going to be running 5 days a week again with this next training cycle, and I am not sure how to fit it in. I was in line to buy some equipment from the Crossfit gym that was going to and they had to put that sale on hold. I runfess that I hope having my own equipment will help, but I need to get motivated and get after it so help me stay accountable. Plus I still need to find a coach that doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

I also runfess that I am SO relieved that things went well with Andrew's teacher at Parent/teacher conference.  If you have read any of my blogs, you have followed the journey we have had with little Andrew being the youngest in the class, with fixed mindset, and attention issues.  We have always battled with can he focus or can he not.  Does he chose to focus at times and is the issue of lack of focus due to confidence, or truly a disorder.  We finally have a teacher that is willing to see our side and work with us instead of just giving us a list of medications.  It truly is refreshing.  Stay tuned.

That is all I have for this month!  It's been a big month of running and I truly runfess I am thankful my body has gotten me through and to the other end!

Week 21 of 24: Training for the Run Amok 50 miler-PEAK WEEK!

Dear Lord, please let me survive this week.  Thank you.  Amen.

Monday:  Normally a rest day, but since the Girls on the Run girls wanted to do a practice 5K, we obliged.  My group did a 4 minute run at about an 11:30 pace with a 1 minute walk.  We did our normal practice run route and the girls that met up with us did amazing.  I am blown away by these girls!!!!!  Since I knew we would get at least 3 miles if not more, I decided to run to the school from my house and bring miss Stella (1.3 miles) and then run home (another 1.3 miles).  That would get me almost 6 miles so I just needed 2 or so miles left.  Had to wait for the heating guys to finish and then headed out with Boom to finish.  Glad that both dogs got some run time and glad that they are both feeling good.  Maybe I should bring boom boom to my 50 too just in case????

Tuesday:  Day off.  I needed it.  I needed a great night of sleep and not an early morning.  My body was very happy with my decision.  I finally got a full night's sleep.

Evidence of fall finally!
Wednesday:  14 miles.  I honestly didn't want to get up or run, but having someone waiting to run with you motivates me.  I got my butt up, over dressed as usual, and headed out.  Rockin Robin and I did 5 miles with Boom and Ebby, and then I switched out for Stella to get my final 9.  Y'all I am tired.
Teamwork!
Thursday:   10 miles.  Tired Tired Tired.  Can I write tired again?  I got plenty of sleep, in bed at 8:30 and slept in till 5:15 am, so getting the sleep I think.  I usually get up an hour before my run and fuel and have coffee and today I just couldn't.  I reset my alarm, slept till the last minute, and was late meeting Robin.  Whoops.  We both agreed our legs felt very tired and like lead.  We teamed up on Ebby (she likes to pull and we haven't found a magic solution to that), so we both hooked up to her and I just sat back and let her do the work.

Friday:  REST DAY.   I rested like a BOSS.  We had our last fall baseball practice of the year in which he got two really good hits and fielded several ground balls and got an our.  I am really hoping the confidence he gains from fall ball and the year of maturity will spill over into a more confident kiddo next year in 7-8 year old league.  We also got to watch a couple of quarters of our local football team's game.  They were playing a team that was 6-0, so we wanted to go represent and cheer.  It was.....kind of boring.  I guess I just remember my brother and our high school playing and how high action and exciting it was and maybe, just maybe I am playing it up in my mind, but maybe not.  I thought the band did pretty good even though they stayed stationary for a lot of their field show (we hardly ever stopped moving, but we had a drill band director that was use to movement based field shows).  Maybe time has just inflated my memories, but wow, kind of underwhelming.  I am glad the Red Raiders won, but I hope they have more than one ball carrier because I only heard one name the entire time over and over and over.

Saturday:  16 miles.  I slept in again and probably hit the road around 8:15ish.  I love cooler weather and fall running.  No more getting up at 4 am unless we absolutely have to.  Again, can I say I was tired? My legs felt like toast from the beginning, various things hurt, and I just really struggled to stay moving.  I had planned to do 10 out and back and then re fuel, swap boom for Stella, and head back out.  Even though I was out of Tailwind, I made the decision to stay out because I was too worried that if I went back to the house that I would NOT go back for the final 6.  I had a few jolly ranchers that I made do with and we got it done.  I had an episode like in the old days of running, right after I had just started where I felt like I was going to pass out post run, go figure.  My fueling was off, I didn't really eat right the night before, and it is what it is.  I haven't had it happen in a super long time.

Sunday:  2.5 hours of running.  I slept in till almost 7:30.  Who am I?? I even got to lay in bed from about 7:30-9:30 pm reading a book.  Whose life is this???  Other than the fact that Stella was puking some of the night thanks to the hubby leaving food out that she ate, I got really good sleep (she puked right up until I fell asleep, thanks Lala).  I headed out about 9 am to some windy wind swept prairie.  Most of the crops are in now so the fields are bare.  The wind has no buffer no so we are at it's mercy.  I had to run several miles without a hat.  I wasn't as tired as I thought I would be but my body is definately at it's limit.  I tried to stay away from the house since Boom was doing so well, but I did have about 15 minutes left so picked up Stella and finished it out with her.  I was so glad to be done but so thankful for the nice weather.

WE MADE IT!  Bring on the taper, even if my long run is 18 miles next weekend.  The weekly miles will be SO much less and that is what I am thankful for this week.  See y'all next week!

Upcoming races 2020!

After reading a few blogs about upcoming plans, it hit me that I haven't really made my formal announcement for my 2020 races.  I am still putting it out there that this is totally tentative and I am certain I will add to it, but here goes nothing!

Spring 2020 goal:  Flint Hill's 50!  I need a buckle and since my first 50 miler doesn't give out buckles, I am going to need one.  Plus, this will be a matching set with my marathon buckles I got a few years ago at this race, AND icing on the cake, Cindy and Miles are also running.  I just can't beat a course that is exactly what I train on plus, it's 10 minutes from my house, so I can stay in my own bed and eat my own food.  I am trying to tweak my plan so that I can recover from my first 50 and be ready to train for my 2nd 50, but I am sure I can get it done.

Fall 2020 goal:  Pumpkin Holler Hunnerd.  Except I want to do the 100K.  I have seen so many awesome posts about this race, just need to make sure it's dog friendly.  I never even considered this race since I assumed it was only for 100 milers, but when i checked out the website looking for something else, I noticed they had a 100K.  AWESOME!  Even if I have to do the 50 miler versus the 100K this race will still work and be super duper fun!

Of course I will more than likely do some of my favorite races along the way including The Hawk marathon/50 miler, The Snake,  various trail nerds races, and The NightHawk.  Feels good to get it down on paper and out there into the Universe!

Week 20 of 24: Training for Run Amok 50 miler

Oh Kansas.  This is why I love you.  Thunderstorms and severe weather topped off by snow.  Apparently we are yet again skipping fall altogether.

Ebby selfie
Monday:  Girls on the Run day/4 miles.  Now that they are doing so many miles, I am rearranging my schedule.  I had four for Wednesday, but I knew we would be over 3 as awesome as the girls were doing, so I figured I could just use whatever we got and take a rest day Wednesday.  The girls surprised me as always and we pushed and got 3.3 miles and i called it close enough and good.  These girls continue to amaze me.  Last week we were doing about 2.5 miles per run/walk session.  I told them we should set 3 as their goal, run a tiny bit faster, take less breaks, and shorten our walk session to 30 seconds and they did it!  SUPER proud!

Tuesday: 12 miles. Woke up to feels like 48!!!! YES!   I totally over dressed but I am so ready for fall/winter running.  I can usually get 10 in pre-having to get Andrew ready to go for school or I can let tony get him ready and run up, switch dogs (deuce gets to walk Andrew to school now), and walk Andrew up to school.  I chose the latter and while I hate not picking out his clothes (daddy had him in shorts and it was 49 out), it was nice to just get it all done prior to walking to school.  Thankfully I have the flexibility to work from home so got a quick shower, did some book work and answered some phone calls/emails, and then went to the office.  Ah, the joys of having a small business.

Wednesday:  Rest day!  Since I basically did my almost 4 with the girls on Monday, I called it good and slept in.  It was also picture day.  Why does my 7 year old look so grown up!!!!!  He is the same size or bigger than most of the 8 year olds in his class.  At least he doesn't eat like it.....yet.

Yes, i broke out my cold gear from Gypsy Runner already!

Thursday:  6 miles. I decided to get what I could with the girls and then finish up.  My hope  was that we would get close to 4 and I would only have 2 left to get done.  The girls and I got around 3.2 done and after cleaning up and packing up, we headed out to get our 2.8 in the misty cold rain.  I am all for cold and wind chills but heck, going from 73 in the morning to feels like 32 is not cool mother nature. Plus the spitting snow/rain made us all very cold even though we were all dressed ready for the weather.

Friday:  Thank God for crazy runner friends. I decided instead of running a 50K by myself I would try the 4 miles every 4 hours for 48 hours.  I needed 31 miles on Saturday and 5ish miles on Sunday, so I decided to break it down and start on Friday night so I wouldn't be running on Sunday when Andrew was suppose to race. I am doing a separate blog post about our adventure so stay tuned.   We did a run at 5:00 pm, and a run at 9 pm to get 8 in our 8 miles for Friday.

Saturday:  More 4 x 4s.  We did 24 total miles.  Runs at 1 am, 5 am, 9am, 1pm, 5 pm, and 9 pm.

Sunday:  Finished up with one last 4 miler at 1 am.   Got about 6 hours of sleep and then got up to head to the track.  I had already alerted the tower that i would NOT be super early like normal.  The boys actually beat me to the track.  What a day we had!  Two heat races since it was the last race of the season and he got a 5th and a 4th out of 7 (although myracepass shows him getting a 4th and a 4th) and a hard fought 5th place after a bad wreck.  His car was damaged so the fact that he got back on the track and finished is amazing.  One of the radius rods was bent so badly that I have no clue how he did it.  All of the kiddos involved in the wreck were okay, just a little sore.  Thank GOD they have amazing safety gear and that their cars protect them that much.

We are SO proud at how far he has come.  He still is kind of cautious, but I kind of like that here lately.  He mostly stays out of wrecks and tends to work his way back up the longer the green flag stays.  We have one more fun race to go and then the season is done.  Since he didn't move up quick enough to be part of the points battle in Jr Honda, he will just have his novice medals and his beautiful plaque to look at till next year.  Heck I think he likes his move up trophy the best anyway LOL!

Next up, PEAK WEEK!  Say a little prayer that I make it to the other side!  Have a great week!

My first 4 x 4 by 48 hours

A little bit of background.  My good friend Cindy who blogs over at Running with Miles had done this work out before and highly suggested it, even for a 50 miler lead up.  I knew I needed a 50K but couldn't find one this particular weekend and the thought of just doing 3 out and backs didn't sound like fun either, so I decided why not try this work out.  The only issues was Andrew had a race Sunday, so I needed to shift things around so that i wouldn't be running any during his races.  We decided to start Friday night so we could finish Sunday early morning.  That gave us 8 total miles on Friday, 24 total miles on Saturday, and 4 total miles on Sunday for a grand total of 36.  My plan called for a 50 K on Saturday and an hour run on Sunday so close enough.  Here is the play by play :)  Robin added her thoughts as well and are below my own.

Robin: I have a running friend that is training for a 50 miler and needed a 50K this weekend. She couldn’t find one that she wanted to run, so she had an idea, “Let’s run a 4 x 4 x 48. It’ll be fun.”  What’s that? I think it might fit the definition of insanity…”doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” Haha! Needless to say, she talked me into it and here I am feeling accomplished and so glad she nudged me.

5:00 pm on Friday.  First 4 miles. feeling good, letting the dogs pull us along at a fast clip.  So weird to only be doing 4.  At some point I know only 4 will be not so fun.  Robin is counting down instead of us counting up, hence the 9 fingers.  1 down, 8 to go or 4 down, 32 to go however you want to look at it.

Robin: We started our program on Friday, October 11 at 5:00 p.m. It was bitterly cold, but with winter gear on, it really didn’t seem so bad. Thankfully, Michelle’s training pace is 4 minute run with one minute walk. We completed the run with our trusty dogs, Ebby and Stella, and Ebby in true form pulled me the entire way.

9:00 pm on Friday.  Ate a normal dinner, got horrible indigestion, took meds.  Couldn't get warm post run, so drank some decaff coffee and piled on blankets.  We refuse to cut on our heat and or our furnace isn't working, so I think it is colder in our house right now than outside.  Tried to stay laying around and doing nothing, but with the family gone out to shop for a birthday present, decided to do some chores that I needed to get done so I can be a sloth on Saturday.  Finally sat down around 8 pm to chill a bit and got super duper tired.    I am use to going to bed at 8:30 pm, so was hoping post our 9:00 run that I would crash.  Run went well, tired but it was cold BUT perfect running weather.  Wind was nonexistent which helped.  I tried running with my new headlamp on just a knit cap to keep some warmth in, and while the light didn't hurt my head, it kept pushing the edge of my cap down into my eyes, which was super annoying.

Robin: 9:00 p.m. and we were out the door again. Cold and dark, but the bitter Kansas winds were non-existent. Ebby pulled and I followed, but all was well with my legs. Or it could be possible that they were just numb from the cold. Back to house and in the recliner to catch some sleep before the next four miles.

1 am on Saturday.  This one was tough to get up for.  Post getting home and in bed after 10, i just couldn't get comfortable.  I was going to keep on my sports bra and socks and then just change into sweat pants and a t shirt and hoodie after every run.  I was sweaty as we had overdressed (no judgments, we haven't had fall yet and to go straight to winter was a bit of a shock).  The house was super cold and even though I had multiple blankets and quilts plus pants and a hoodie, I just couldn't get my temp regulated. I would go through super cold moments and then be sweating buckets (hello menopause maybe?). I think I finally went to sleep around 11 something and was back up at 12:40 to get dressed.  It was even colder, but again no wind. We switched up our route so as not to run by the two houses that had dogs and kids.  I am sure those dogs bark all night anyway, but we didn't want them to wake up the kiddos barking at us.  Robin said she kind of liked the different route because it felt shorter, even though it was the same distance.  I like mental games too when I am tired.  I also got head butted by Boom at this point.  As i was picking up my shoes in the dark to move them to the side of the bed, he jumped forward and his head collided with my left eye. Y'all I saw major stars and my eye wept for probably an hour afterwards.  I honestly thought it would be swollen when I got up.  All i could think of was dang, people punch each other in the eyes on purpose and if it hurts a fraction of that much, how in the heck do they do it?

Robin: Alarm goes off at 12:40. Up and ready to go with warm clothes, however, Ebby decided that she would rather sleep and stayed home. Nice run in the dark. We changed our route a bit so that we didn’t wake the families with the barky dogs on our usual route. Got done, snapped a picture, and back to the recliner to catch a couple of hours of sleep.

5 am on Saturday.  Surprisingly even with little sleep (same thing as above) I was wide awake at 4:40 am.  I decided that even though I wanted to be out of my sweaty running clothes, that i didn't want to yet take a shower and wake up too much. so new clothes on not showered body. Oh well, that is what laundry is for right?  Again we overdressed, but I would rather have too much on and take it off than to not have enough on.  We decided to sleep a little more and shower post the next run.

Robin: It is amazing that I didn't require an alarm for the 5:00 am run. It is our usual run time, but with little sleep, I thought I would be dragging.  Bundled up, strapped on Ebby, and out we went.  I am really starting to have some pain in my calves and down the outside of my lower left leg.  "Make sure your toes are pointing forward" is the message running through my head as we completed this run.  Going to try and get a couple more hours of sleep to get 6 total hours...my average.

9 am on Saturday.  Subbed out Boom for Stella and gave her a break.  Over dressed again, but new clothes, YES.  Boom had never run loose with Ebby on leash before and he kept trying to smell her butt mid run and or would dive in front of robin or run on her heels.  He got several lessons in why you don't do that.  He also went chest first into a huge cuckleburr bush.  I ended up having to cut them out because he wouldn't let Stella pick them out.  Hopefully he will learn not to go off road, but I am betting he didn't.  I loved seeing the sun after being in the dark for so long.  Finally got a hot shower, some caffeine, and some lunch.

Robin: The sun is shining and the temps are cool, so bundled up, put on my calf sleeves and headed down the road at 9:00 a.m. Ebby really isn’t missing a beat and I swear this dog never tires. Thankfully, the calf-sleeves do the trick and the pain is gone. Still feeling really good after the run. I keep wondering when will my legs say no more, but for now I’ll take it.

1 pm on Saturday: I really should know better than to eat a biggish meal and then try to run. I had a side stitch pretty much the entire run that finally went away after a few burps, but made me run most of the miles in pain.  It was in the 50s and pleasant, but i can feel the tiredness creeping in.  Deuce wanted to sub in, so since it was a short run, I let the old man come. He ran probably twice as much as we did and seemed to have so much fun. I do miss bringing him on my runs.

Robin: Grabbed a quick omelet for lunch with Michelle. Over lunch, I signed up to do a 4 hour ultra with Michelle...say WHAT?!?  This woman is a bad influence on me when it comes to running. Hahaha! Back home and did some cleaning before heading out the door for 4 mile lap number 5. Over-dressed and stripping off layers, but it was another good run. The calf-sleeves are still keeping my legs feeling good and I am actually looking forward to the next 4 miles. I feel such a sense of accomplishment that grows stronger with each run.

5 pm on Saturday. Again amazing weather.  Legs were feeling it, but again we just told our minds that it was only 4.

Robin: 5:00 p.m. and we have been at this for 24 hours...wow! I can’t believe I will get 20 miles in
a single day. I look at my watch and see that I already have 45,000+ steps for the day. As we
are running, again we are over-dressed, little thoughts of running a marathon jump in my head,
but I quickly squelch the idea. Michelle suggests another 25K and I can absolutely do that.
I am amazed that my legs are still feeling strong after all the running. It is funny, I really figured I
would be cursing myself and Michelle for doing this, but I am actually having fun. I can’t believe I am
actually kind of sad that we are done after the 1:00 a.m. run.

9 pm on Saturday.  While it was nice to have a band serenading us on our journey, it was kind of annoying too as it was SUPER loud and we were at least 2 miles away from the bar.  I guess I am getting old.  Still tired but amazingly we still talked and sang and made it through.  Boomy got a turn again which puts his mileage up to 8 miles for the day.  I swear this dog could do an ultra already.

Robin: The band at the local bar is on the patio and LOUD tonight. I decide to let Ebby have a break,
she has been pulling me for 24 miles and I don’t want to overdo it with her. She stands in the yard and
barks loudly as we head out at 9:00.  It is a beautiful clear night. The moon is shining brightly, the air
is calm and the temperature is comfortable. The good thing is we could hear the band on our entire
run. We even sang along to their cover of Cheap Trick’s Surrender. Isn’t that ironic. My legs are tired
at first, but as I keep running, the feel good. I can’t believe I have completed 20 miles in a day! This
is huge for me and to think, I’ll have run 36 miles by 2:00 a.m.

1 am on Sunday.  Again I was awake pretty quickly.  I know I had gotten a little bit of sleep, but still having weird internal thermostat issues.  We were both SO glad to be done and to be out of running clothes. I had kept a sports bra on the entire time and I honestly don't know how people sleep in those!  We talked about continuing and doing more but we both needed sleep and that though won out.  Maybe next time we can do the entire 48 hours?????

Robin: Awake at 12:30 (no alarm), grab a quick protein bar, dress and wait. This is it! Last 4 miles and we couldn’t have asked for better weather at 1:00 in the morning. My legs are tired and Ebby pulls. I swear she is the most stubborn dog, EVER! I am feeling the tiredness, but am also pumped up because I DID IT! I ran the entire program with Michelle and didn’t give up on myself. I actually pondered running at 5...who am I? I decided I needed to get some sleep more than another 4 miles.

me trying to sleep in between runs with a messed up internal thermostat

Things we learned:  You can do anything with a friend by your side.  Always talk your friends into doing wild and crazy things.   Robin and Mel have both said yes to lots of crazy ideas I have had and I am blessed to have them.   Plus, it helps when you are running in the middle of the night  to have someone else, because honestly if she wasn't meeting me, I would have totally backed out and either run on the mill or gone back to sleep.  Don't eat big high calorie high protein meals and run (ehem omelet that I craved so badly) or you will get side stitches.  This shouldn't be a huge problem during the race since I have my fuel, but some aid stations can and will make you big meals if you want them.  Roll out the sore spots so they don't get worse.  Chaffing is still real even running 4 mile blocks.  Keep that in check or you will regret it.  Running at night is interesting, stay safe. I probably would have stuck to the mill if I didn't have a friend for the night runs.  I would do this again and will training for my next 50, and I can see great value to those running overnight races or 100 milers.

Robin: To be honest, when I first agreed, I was secretly hoping that something would come up
and I would have to back out. I was unsure I could do this many miles. I am such an “In your head”
runner, I figured I would give up on myself and I didn’t want to disappoint my dear friend. But here
I am, 33 hours from start to finish and I survived. No horrible pain, no blisters, no regrets, just pride.
Proud of myself for even agreeing to this, but even more so for completing it entirely! What have I
learned?
  • I am stronger than I ever believed.
  • Running doesn’t mean going as fast as you can. It is moving forward without judgement.
  • I like the idea of run/walk intervals, so I may even sign up for a 50K someday.
  • I have the mental fortitude to keep going if I just focus on the big picture, not the current discomfort.
  • Good friends see the strength in you and push you beyond what you think are your limits.

Michelle is that friend and thank you for “encouraging” me to do this with you.
Let’s do it again sometime soon.  Lots of love, Your Hesitant Running Buddy!

Week 19 of 24: Training for the Run Amok 50 miler: CUT BACK WEEK

Ah the end of September and the beginning of fall.  Complete with feels like 98 and ending with a wind chill.  Really mother nature????  Don't worry, fall came around, but so did lots of rain.  Can I just have my pumpkin spiced coffee, pumpkin beer, soup, and cold weather minus moisture? Get ready for pictures of my kiddo because dark hangs on longer in the morning, so it's hard to get sunrise photos or any photos for that matter.

60s day at school.  Peace out dude!

Monday:  Rest day.  It was feels like 98, so the girls were running inside the school, which meant I didn't have to run.  I did have to count laps and we figured 10 laps was close to a mile.  They are doing AWESOME and some are already at 3 miles of mostly running.  WOW!

Boom says let's go mom!
Tuesday:  8 miles.  It was feels like 78 degrees with 86% humidity at 4 am.  Bleh.  I was soaked post my first trip out with Stella, and then headed back out with boom to finish and got even more soaked.  I decided to try Boom off leash and he did WONDERFUL!  I am so excited that he is turning into such a great little running dog.  He would run a bit and then check in, and then take off again.  He probably ran double the mileage I ran.  I am keeping him on leash any time I feel like he might put himself in any danger like around cars or in the neighborhood, but thus far, he is doing great out on the gravel.

Hawaiian day at school.  Hang ten!

Wednesday:  4 miles.  Woke up to rain.  Changed my alarm and went back to bed.  The smart thing would have been to run on the mill. Apparently, I am not a smart person.  I had a massage scheduled for after work, but Trina called and had a cancellation during the day, so I jumped on it.  My whole body needed work, but mostly my rib cage and hips needed her magic the most.  Lots of cupping, lots of flinching, but lots of releasing and relaxing.  I walked out feeling like a  new woman.  No running happened later that day and that is okay.

Happy boy

Thursday:  8 miles.  5 with Stella and 3 with boom boom.  It was almost cold!  Feels like 49 and I still wore shorts.  The dogs LOVED it and so did I, even if the humidity was still in the high 80s.  I also did 2.5 miles with my GOTR girls later in the day and we all enjoyed the cooler temps.  I surprisingly wasn't too sore from my massage.  We had another great practice and the girls that are doing the walk run method are up to 2.5 miles.  I think we are going to slowly drop off some of the walk breaks because honestly, they are doing SO amazingly well.

Friday:  Rest day. We had family come in so we had a big dinner at Tall Grass Tap house, some yummy dark beers were drank, and we listened to the KSU pep band rock out.  I will admit, it was kind of nice knowing I didn't have to get up to run the next day.

Saturday: Rest day or active rest day.  We raced pretty much all day, so does having an  heart attack most of the day count as active recovery?  We had 11 kiddos in Jr Honda, which is the most we can have in a class before we have to split mains.  We only had one kiddo in Jr novice, so she moved up, and a lot of the kiddos that haven't been there showed up so it was BIG.  We had several rain delays, but we knew once the weather moved through that it would be perfect, so we hung out at the track and the kids played while we waited.

First heat race: Same story different verse.  Andrew was outside and he just got out of the way and let everyone pass.  Second heat race he was inside pole and he stayed the course and got second!!!!  Feature he was again inside pole and he stayed the course and got 4th out of 11!!!!  He drove, he tried, and he succeeded.  He was pretty excited the whole day.  Afterwards we had a long meeting about the fate of our club. Stay tuned, not sure what will happen but I know what is best will.

Sunday:  Long run day! We had a super long night and didn't get in home and in bed till almost midnight. After the race and a long meeting, we stopped and had burgers with our track family. I knew the weather was going to be cool the whole day, so I slept in and then we did our grocery shopping and tutoring first.  I headed out around 2 to get my 14.  It was cool, cloudy, and windy, all of my favorite things :)  I did 11 with Stella and then 3 with boom and most of my 11 with robin and Ebby.

I will admit it wasn't a great run.  While I love cut back weeks, it seems like those are the weeks when my body reminds me just what I have been doing to it.  Ouch.  I kept telling myself I just did 24 miles and was fine, to just shake it off.

Back to the grind next week!  I have my 4 x 4 by 48 planned and another weekend of racing.   Fall looks like it's here to stay so let's do this!  Have a great week!
